What to Expect From Your Child’s First Voice Lesson (A Mom’s Survival Guide)

If your kid has their first voice lesson coming up, you’re probably nervous too. That’s normal.

I’m Samuel Picou, vocal coach from NBC’s The Voice Season 5. Here’s exactly what to expect — and what to watch out for.

What a Good First Lesson Looks Like

  1. 5 min: Coach asks your kid what songs they love (no judgment)
  2. 10 min: Easy warm-ups — humming, lip trills, sirens. Should feel like games.
  3. 10 min: Range test (which notes they can sing comfortably)
  4. 5 min: Try a song they picked in their range
  5. 5 min: Wrap-up — what to practice this week (under 5 min/day)

What to Bring

  • A water bottle (singing dehydrates fast)
  • A notebook (for your kid to write notes)
  • 2 songs they love and want to learn
  • Open mind — no pressure

🚩 3 Red Flags in a First Lesson

  1. Coach makes your kid feel bad about their voice — leave immediately
  2. No structured warm-up — they’re just winging it
  3. Pushes scales/theory in lesson #1 — kids need to fall in love first

What One Mom Said

“Kenzie stopped doubting herself. She actually believes she can sing now.” — Kenya, Kenzie’s mom
