Only about 1 in 10,000 people are born with perfect pitch. If your kid is one of them — they have a serious musical gift.
I’m Samuel Picou, vocal coach and NBC’s The Voice Season 5 alum. I’ve tested thousands of kid voices. Here’s how to spot it at home.
Perfect Pitch vs Relative Pitch
Most great singers have relative pitch — they can match a note you give them. Only a tiny fraction have perfect pitch — they can name any note from memory, with no reference.
The 60-Second Home Test
- Sit your kid facing away from a piano (or piano app).
- Play 5 random single notes, one at a time.
- Ask: “What note is that?” If they say “C” or “F#” without seeing — they have it.

What If They Don’t Have Perfect Pitch?
Don’t worry. 99% of pro singers don’t have perfect pitch either. They have great relative pitch, which IS trainable. That’s what my Free Kit teaches.
