Mom — if you’re wondering whether your kid is “too young” or “too old” to start singing lessons, you’re asking the right question.
I’m Samuel “Sammy C” Picou, a vocal coach from NBC’s The Voice Season 5, and after coaching hundreds of kids, I’ll give you the real answer most teachers won’t.
The Honest Best-Age Answer: 6 to 8
Between ages 6 and 8 is the sweet spot. Their ear is developed enough to match pitch, their attention span can handle a 20-minute lesson, and their voice hasn’t started changing yet.
But here’s the truth: any age between 5 and 16 works as long as the lessons are age-appropriate.

Age-By-Age Breakdown
- Ages 5–7: Playful, game-based lessons. No theory. Just fun pitch-matching games.
- Ages 8–10: Real warm-ups, song choice, breath control basics.
- Ages 11–13: Vocal range work, performance training.
- Ages 14–16: Voice changes (especially boys) — needs a coach who understands vocal puberty.
