Every mom wonders it: “Is my kid actually good… or am I biased?”
I’m Samuel Picou. Performed on NBC’s The Voice Season 5, now I work with kids every week. After hearing thousands of young voices, I can tell you exactly what to look for.
The 5 Signs of Real Singing Talent in Kids
1. They Sing to Themselves When No One’s Watching
The #1 sign. Talent comes paired with love — kids who have it sing in the shower, the car, while doing homework. They can’t help it.
2. They Match Pitch Without Trying
Play a note on a piano. Can they hum it back? Most kids can’t do this naturally until trained. Yours can? Strong sign.
3. They Get Emotional in Songs
Real talent isn’t loudness — it’s feeling. If your kid pauses, breathes, or cries during a song, they’ve got the artist gene.
4. They Mimic Other Singers (And Sound Like Them)
Mimicry is the foundation of vocal skill. If your child copies Olivia Rodrigo or Bruno Mars and you can recognize who — that’s range AND ear.
5. They Want to Perform — Even If Nervous
The desire to be heard is the seed. Everything else is trainable.

How to Develop Their Talent (Without Burnout)
The trap is overtraining. 5 minutes a day of the right warm-ups beats 1 hour of random practice. Consistency wins.
